Song Challenge, Day 5: Always Something There to Remind Me

Mom and Dad usually had the radio on in the car, but in the house music nearly always lost out to the television. Sunday mornings were the exception to the rule.  It depended on which of them got up first to pile a stack of records on the stereo (are you old enough to remember when you could do that?).  If it was Dad, who came of age in the 40's, the selection would include Bing Crosby, Benny Goodman, the Andrews Sisters and others from the Big Band era.  Mom's choices were a little newer, but leaned toward the mellow, because good old Mom...when her peers were changing the world to the music of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Dylan and the like, she was listening to Pat Boone and Ricky Nelson.  Either way, I'd wake up to music thumping in my ears.

I'd guess it was this ecclectic mix of music (and throw in the Country they listened to on the radio) that has shaped my own love of any and all kinds of music.  I was ridiculously excited the other day to find the greatest hits of Eddy Arnold in the bargain CD bin at Walmart.  Big Band and Swing, though, are among my favorites and at my wedding my dad and I danced to Sentimental Journey.  It was the one and only time I ever danced with him.

Dad's been gone 17 years, but every time I hear this song I remember that dance and the last time I was Daddy's Little Girl.

Awwwwe :)

You won't be surprised to know I grew up with similar exposure. Mom liked the Everly Brothers, Ricky Nelson, Peter Paul & Mary ... Dad liked The Who, Johnny Cash, Grand Funk. My brother, the Beatles, Beach Boys, AC/DC. Voila! Musical me, who loves all of the above, was molded :)

No, not surprised at all. At least you had people in your house that liked rock. I had to discover that myself. No idea how Mom came of age in the 60's without listening to some of it, but she did.
