Song Challenge, Day 6: Taking Me Back

Today I'm to share a song with you that reminds me of a particular place.  Two jumped out at me right away and since they both evoke such strong memories I'm going to share them both.

The first is Miranda Lambert's The House that Built Me.  By the way....ACM song of the year.  The song is about a woman going back to the house she grew up in and her memories.  It maybe makes me think a little bit of the houses I lived in growing up, but there were so many that I never really got attached to any of them.  The house I always think of as home and have contemplated knocking on the door of to ask if I could walk through one last time...is my grandparents' house.  It was the constant in my life and where the happiest times of my growing up years were spent.

The second song is John Denver's Country Roads.  It came out during the years my family lived in a wildlife preserve here in the mountains of southwestern Pennsylvania.  I loved that song.  This area really isn't so different from West Virgina.  Same mountains, same forests, same kind of people.  I loved living in Rachelwood and it is the only one of my childhood homes that I've ever been homesick for.  Actually, I still feel that way now and then and I haven't been there for 35 years.  All I have to do is listen to Country Roads to go back.

What a cool challenge! Where do you find these things? We moved too much too, and mostly lived in cities (cities in Maine are not BIG but they are cities) and yet that John Denver song always spoke to me. Called me to a home I hadn't found yet I guess. It still kind of does!

The one constant in my life was my grandmother. I lived in her home from the age of 6 to the age of 17. My uncle still owns it but I will not go inside. I went into the house the day she died and watched my relatives strip it. They fought over furniture and knick-knacks and ripped pictures from the wall. One of my aunts turned to me and demanded, "What do you want?" I told her I wanted my grandmother, then I walked out of the house and have never gone back. Gram isn't there so neither is anything of value.

Beth...I just did a search for 30 day challenges. Found a ton of them, but I like music so much this one won out as the first to do. I know what you mean about the song. A lot of his songs evoke such a sense of....home?

Quilly...similar actions are what keep me from going to ask if I can see inside my grandparents' house. We had to clear it out when my grandmother went to the nursing home, but my aunts were so ugly about it all. One begrudged anyone taking anything. The other took everything she could manage to shove in her van. My mom took absolutely nothing and I only took what my grandmother had always said she wanted me to have (her china cabinet that had belonged to her mother-in-law and a painting done by my great-great-uncle. And then there was the great "crock feud." Nana had been given an old wine crock and had used it as an umbrella stand for years. One antique dealer stopped every year and made an offer. It went up every year, but was never more than a few hundred $$. So, we knew it was worth something and said it would go at auction, which royally ticked off a cousin who thought we should give it to her "to remember Aunt Mary by." Yeah, right. She never came to visit her and anything valuable any of the older relatives she cared for had seemed to end up in her possession. Well, she wasn't happy but offered us $2000 for the crock. If she was offering that much we knew it was worth more and it would be a real help in paying for the nursing home. The crock ended up going for over $4000! And our dear cousin? She went around telling everyone at the auction that we'd promised it to her and then changed our minds when we found out how valuable it was. What a witch. So yeah, I TOTALLY know what you mean about the relatives and emptying a house.

Both of these are perfect for the prompt. Home is where the heart is and these both make me glad I'm at a good home. :)
