Cold, Flu & Hodgepodge Season

Hello, Wednesday!  That means it's time for the Wednesday Hodgepodge with Mrs. 4444 at From This Side of the Pond.  I couldn't skip it even though it means staying up a bit later tonight to get it done.  I may have some time tomorrow, but with this crazy schedule I'm trying to keep up with, you just never know.  I am thrilled to say I got a good bit of reading done tonight and I got my university online account set up so I'll be able to view the online course when it starts.

Well, before I get off on a tangent and end up staying up waaay too late, here's the Hodgepodge:

1. What do you do at the first sign of a cold? Will you get a flu shot this year?
~ I always know a cold is coming because I feel it in my tonsils the day before (yes, I still have them....nothing but nasty old germ catchers).  I brew some peppermint tea and pop some vitamin C and zinc as soon as I can.  I should get a flu shot.  I work with kids.

2. What advice can you give about how to conquer fear?
~ Suck it up and just DO it.  Whatever you're afraid of is never as bad as all the stuff you imagine.

3. Share two good things about your life right now.
~ I am enrolled in two classes through my denomination's seminary.  It's something I've wanted to do for a long time and even though I'm feeling a bit stressed I'm really excited about it.
~ My daughter is working, has a decent boyfriend, is drama-free, and no longer wants to move to Alabama.  If you've followed me for any amount of time, you know this is a HUGE deal.

4. A hot fall fashion trend in 2011 is a return to sixties style...tunics with pants, shift dresses, pencil skirts, cinched waists, bold prints, high necklines and short lengths to name a few. How does this fashion trend fit with your wardrobe and personal sense of style?
~ I'm good with the bold prints and tunics, but leggings, pencil skirts, mini's, and the like are going to have to wait until I lose a lot more weight.

5. Were you involved in scouting as a kid? How about as an adult?
~ Nope and nope.  I was in Civil Air Patrol and we thought Boy Scouts were a bunch of sissies.

6. Apple, pear, plum, pumpkin...your favorite fall flavor?
~ I can't choose between apple and pumpkin.  I love all things of both flavors (and smells).

7. What characteristics do you think are essential in a good teacher?
~ Truly caring about the children you teach.  My daughter had a horrible time with school and in 13 years we only had two or three teachers who really cared and put in the effort.  Most just went through the motions and paid lip service to solutions.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
~ Cable service is nothing but organized crime.  I signed up for a bundle last year.  They put our cable, internet and phone together for $89/month.  The salesman guaranteed the price for two years.  The bill came today...$264/month!!!  I have to find the receipt the salesman signed and argue with them tomorrow.  If that doesn't work, I'm going to threaten to transfer my service elsewhere if they don't drop the price.  And either way, Tim's going to lose all the movie channels he likes.  Those are absolutely ridiculous....and if they're gone I won't have to watch the same stupid movies over and over.

Drama free daughters are good : ) Hope you get your cable bill resolved...ours is a little out of control but they make the channel packages in such a way that there is never a package with all the channels you want...you have to keep upgrading. It's crazy!

Ellen...I hope you know I don't mean YOU. I know there are good teachers out there. We just never ran into very many. When we did I felt like crying with relief...and then grief because we'd only have them for a year.

Joyce...eliminating the movie channels will make a big dent, but it will still be about $200/month. That is just ridiculous!

Dawn...Hi! Thanks for visiting me and leaving a comment. :)

Rejoicing with you on #3. I have 3 daughters and I can't imagine if they decided to move away where I couldn't see them often.

I agree with you on the cable bill. Since we had "locked" in for 2 yrs. when we went to Florida for the winter, they refused to give us the "snow bird" rate, because we were locked in. So, we had to pay that same amount, even though there wasn't a soul in the house even using the cable for 2 whole months! Grrr

My middle daughter ~ poor baby ~ through no fault of her own is living a life FULL of drama right now ~ and it's Wearing.Me.Out! We'd both love to see that stop.

HATE the cable company ~ crooks...every one of them.... Maybe I should say drug dealers, 'cause I'm hooked on their product :-)

Ohhh...so much to comment on!

#2 - Sounds like a Nike commercial!

#3 - Yay to children who are somewhat settled!!

#7 - What a shame for your children. My principal stresses how important it is for us teachers to form relationships with our children. They won't be willing to learn if they don't want to work hard for the teachers.

#8 - I so totally agree with you. I hope you find that receipt and sock it to those cable people!! Grrr.

Loved reading your answers. I know we pay a lot for cable but that's just crazy. Hope you win!
