Friday Fragments

Mommy's Idea

I can't believe it's Friday and time to share the fragments of my life with you again, but Mrs. 4444 at Half-Past Kissin' Time says it's so.

I am not getting enough sleep.  By nature I'm a night owl and as soon as school lets out for the summer and I am freed from the evil alarm clock I revert to my natural ways.  Much to Tim's dismay.  He is not a night owl.  In fact, I don't know what he is.  He can and does sleep a lot when he doesn't have to get up for work.  It's nothing for him to sleep in, take a nap, and go to bed early all in the same day.  Makes me crazy, okay, and a little bit jealous because I usually run on 5-6 hours of sleep.  That's just the point at which I wake up.  This summer though, between my normal night owl habits, Tim getting up for work, the dogs getting up at odd times to go out, and Megan keeping a completely nocturnal schedule that has her coming and going at irregular times through the night....I'm lucky to get four hours of sleep.  It's just not cutting it.

Yesterday I reported the confusion with the roofing company and my number and Tim's aunt's.  It got straightened out, but I may still see some roof action here this week.  Our shingles got delivered yesterday.

The Friends of the Library held the final day of their annual used book sale yesterday.  I went last Saturday for the preview to get first shot at the books and came home with a bag full that I paid $1 a piece for.  Yesterday was the bag sale....$1 for as many books as you could cram into a paper grocery sack.  I found enough books I wanted to fill two sacks.

I'm beginning to wonder how safe my mom is as a driver on the road.  I think she is wondering, too.  Last week I told on here how she had been driving through an intersection in the neighborhood and hit another car.  That was not her fault.  She did not have a stop sign, the other car did and that driver thinking there was a 4-way stop pulled right out in front of her.  It demolished Mom's front bumper (they're just made of plastic these days) and is costing the other driver's insurance over $800 to replace.  Yesterday, when we were leaving to go to the book sale, Mom backed out of her driveway....right into a flatbed equipment trailer that was parked on the other side of the road.  Smashed her rear bumper.  The good news is that maybe, just maybe it won't be her fault.  The trailer was sitting on the road.  It was nearly directly behind her driveway.  It was difficult to see from the car.  And Tim says (and being in construction he should know) that if it was blocking one lane of the road (it was) they should have had a flagman, especially since they'd unhooked the truck and it was obviously going to sit for more than just a minute.  I took pictures for Mom.  I don't know how she's going to handle it.  She seemed reluctant to report it to anyone who could do something about the trailer.  We'll see what her husband had to say.

I'm going shopping and having lunch with a friend today.  If I don't get going I'm not going to be ready when she gets here.  Have a great Friday!

Take a nap!

Question, will those books be back in the book sale next year--will you donate them once done?

you didn't mention your mom's age but in today car dominated world it is really hard to give up that driving freedom. I worry about my MIL. Hopefully she stopped driving at night. Much harder to see at night.
This reminded me of the dumb (IMHO) neighbor we had across the street years ago. He would park his car directly in-line with my driveway. I did hit his mother's car once.

Hope you're able to get more rest! I'd definitely take a nap!

Ellen...Sometimes I do, but they are short. I'm not a good napper.

Lisleman...Mom is going to 67, but she's had cataracs removed from both eyes and I know she tries to avoid night driving as much as she can. I've noticed she drives a lot slower than she used to and she doesn't seem to trust herself to judge distances. Hopefully, this is just a run of bad luck and she will be okay for a while yet.

Beth...Maybe when Tim finishes up the projects he's on and takes some of his vacation time...

Oh, and Ellen...if they aren't one I want to add to my collection or I haven't loaned them or given them to someone else, then yes, a lot of the books will end up redonated.

I worry about my dad's driving too - - - not fun to get to the stage of trying to parent the parent.

Oh goodness, it'd be hard to talk about no longer driving to a 67 year old. That seems so young.

I stay up all hours of night and my husband sounds like yours. I thrive on 8 hours of sleep, but if I don't get it, it's OK. I usually go to bed at 3 and up at 8 or 9.
