Frozen Hodgepodge

*As always, a big thanks to Joyce @ From This Side of the Pond for creating and hosting the Hodgepodge.

1. The popular saying, 'All is fair in love and war' is originally credited to English writer John Lyly.  Is he right?
~ No!  Love is about respect, devotion, care, wanting the best for the other person and do your best to give it.  And as for war, I'm thinking that attitude would just make things worse....not to mention that's not the kind of behavior God calls us to.

2. Are you a cereal eater?  What's your favorite kind?
~ I eat it, but not with any regularity.  I love Lucky Charms....chocolate if you can find them.

3. A five year old in Pennsylvania was recently given a ten day school suspension for talking with a friend about shooting one another with a Hello Kitty Bubble gun (the gun blows bubbles).  She did not have the gun with her at school.  A psychological evaluation was also ordered and the incident was recorded on her permanent record.  The suspension was later reduced to two days and her parents are suing to have the incident removed from her file. Your thoughts?  (If you missed the story click here for details).
~ I think we've lost all common sense.  Zero tolerance for threats, bullying, weapons and the like is great in the school setting, but all that for a 5-year-old talking about a bubble gun?  Please.  We are becoming a nation of idiots.

4. Whatever happened to_____________________________?
~ Respect.  Everybody's busy demanding it for themselves, but I don't see those same people giving any to anyone else.  It's all about "What's in it for me?"

5.  January 23rd is National Handwriting Day, billed as a day to reacquaint yourself with a pen and pencil.  Do you like your handwriting? Do you prefer to print or write in cursive?  This date was chosen because its the birth date of John Hancock. What's the last thing you signed your name to?
~ My cursive is okay and I've had people say they like it, but I hate it.  I think my printing looks better.  Based on what I see with kids today...computers have pretty much killed cursive.  Kids can barely manage enough cursive to put their "John Hancock" on anything.

6. Speaking of John Hancock...ever been to Philadelphia? Do you have any desire to visit the city of Brotherly Love?
~ I've been there, but it was when I was really young to visit relatives.  I don't remember it.  I don't have any relatives there these days and I don't have any desire to visit.

7.  Share something funny you've heard a child say.
~ A couple of years ago one little guy on the bus up and announced "I like dark-skinned women with big bellies."  That was pretty funny, coming out of the blue as it did.  I hear a lot of off the wall comments....some the parents would die of embarrassment if they knew what their kid was sharing.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

~ If you Facebook, do you block anyone from reading your posts?  I've never done that, but I'm considering it.  I have a cousin who is extremely liberal.  I on the other hand am fairly conservative.  (You're shocked, I know. lol)  We don't see eye to eye.  We know it.  He posts his liberal views, pictures, links, etc. and I look the other way.  He doesn't return the favor, though.  Let me post my views and he pipes in and no, he isn't "nice" or diplomatic about it.  He's letting me know in no uncertain terms that he thinks I'm an idiot.  I don't want to unfriend him, but am really tired of his garbage.  Just wondering how successful the blocking certain posts option is.  Anyone done it?

You don't have to tighten your FB security. You can just block your cousin's posts if you like. I had a cousin who did just that. She blocked me, and when I found out it made me very sad. But she didn't like my opinions an decided not to read them. Her family members are still my FB friends though, so I see the faily updates.

Ive had to hide a few people from my newsfeed, but havent actucally blocked anyone from reading. I dont mind debate, but courtesy goes both ways.

I was a teacher. I sometimes told parents not to believe everything they heard about me and I wouldnt believe everything I heard about them!

Lucky Charms is a great cereal choice.

Daughter is considering blocking someone for those same reasons. I've never blocked anyone but I have changed them from "friends" to "acquaintances" and that helps.

I ended up blocking someone because of their language and very liberal views...I think I'm better of because of it, too. Your answer to #7 totally cracked me up!

Marla...I'm trying to avoid just that, making him feel bad. Though I suspect he wouldn't. It would be me that did. I don't have a lot of family and other than politics we get along. I just want to make my political posts invisible to him, not everything.

Joyce...I don't care that his posts show on my newsfeed. I just ignore them if I don't want to read them. I've dropped out of "conversations" because of the constant notices, but I've only blocked one person and that was a former classmate who decided to make it her personal mission in life to convert me to a liberal...and I still feel guilty about it. LOL

Wayne...sugar-coated oat bits and marshmallows...what's not to love??

My Kid's Mom...Goes to show what I know. I didn't know you could make someone an acquaintance. I hope the blocking straightens things out for your daughter. There's so much drama among the younger ones and FB just makes it worse. My daughter has unfriended or blocked several people over the last couple of years.

April...You remind me of another friend. She "slices and dices" her friends list and never looks back. Me? I have such huge guilt issues. LOL And yes, that little guy was such a character. I threatened to write a book of the things he said. I did quietly speak to Mom a couple of times though to let her know some VERY private things he was sharing with the entire bus.

Bp....yeah, they are the bomb! I can't get them around here. Someone found them online for me a few years ago. Not sure if you can still get them that way or not.

Love Lucky Charms! Especially picking the marshmallows right out of the box. : ) Yes, I'm one of those!

You can also customize who sees your posts--it's the little earth globe below the post box. Hit custom, and there is a place to insert who you don't want to see your posts.
Anymore, I am getting away from Facebook-even wrote a post about it a couple of weeks ago! How has it become the platform to attack each other? And if it's any comfort to you, you aren't the only one who has had this problem. I'm so disappointed in how I've seen people treat each other on there-a site that used to be such fun. =(
Sigh....
Anyway, have a great night!

I think we became a nation of idiots a while back!

When I was 19, and teaching VBS, I asked a roomful of children (maybe 7 or 8 year olds) what was the farthest back thing they could remember. (I don't remember the spiritual significance of the question.) Seth Miller waved his hand wildly so I called on him and he YELLED, "I remember when the sperm hit me!" Cue confused looks on the faces of the other children and I lost it. I'm still laughing 35 years later!

Retired...you don't know what you're missing! :)

Jill...Yes!! But hate when the marshmallows run out. No reason to continue eating. :/

Josanne...Thanks. I think that's what I'm looking for. I don't want to have to completely blog my cousin...just keep him from seeing any political posts I make. I'm not ready to give it up yet.

Beth...Oh my!! That is definitely the kind of thing my bus boy would blurt out. The worst was the day he informed us all his daddy had a hairy pee-pee. I could have died. I am soooo glad his dad never picks him up. I don't think I could look at the man.
